Grandeza Studio and Locument

January 13, 2025Admin

GRANDEZA STUDIO (Amaia Sánchez Velasco, Jorge Valiente Oriol and Gonzalo Valiente) is a collective of architects and artists based between Madrid and Sydney and founded in 2011. Their work studies late-capitalist spaces and narratives to identify –through critical analysis– and challenge –through political imagination– the mechanisms that veil and normalize structural forms of violence against bodies and territories. To do so, they develop transdisciplinary methodologies, entangling research and spatial practice, with writing, performance, design, filmmaking and pedagogy.

LOCUMENT (Francisco Lobo and Romea Muryń) is a research studio that combines filmmaking with architecture and urban research. They use architecture and film as analytical, critical and subversive tools to emphasise contemporary issues and dissect their resolutions. They see the importance of observing rapidly changing social conditions through the influential factors of technology, economy, politics and urban environment.

STRATA INCOGNITA proposes a trans-scalar and trans-temporal journey through the geographies that articulate the soil as infrastructure for growing food, but also as an ecosystem and somatic archive of crimes, memories and mythologies. The film navigates the hidden landscapes that build and destroy soils, connecting the biological and chemical processes that occur underground with the industrial production of pesticides, fertilizers and biostimulants, as well as the geopolitical and environmental conflicts associated with their production and distribution. In a traveling staging, four mysterious agents intervene on the ground, appropriating the paraphernalia of the scientific laboratory and the archaeological excavation, while transforming their aesthetics of truth and expert certainty into dialectical weapons and political imagination. STRATA INCOGNITA invites us to think about other ways of cultivating our relationship with the soils and to unlearn the epistemic assumptions that support our hyper-extractive approach to this world that is as close as it is strange.

STRATA INCOGNITA is a short film commissioned for the Spanish Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2023: “The Laboratory of the Future” and developed as a collaboration between GRANDEZA STUDIO and LOCUMENT.
